Artist Profile

img_0033.jpg

John Mackintosh is a self-taught fine artist who lives and works on Salt Spring Island, BC.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, he has been frequently visiting BC since childhood. He fell in love with the beauty of what this province has to offer his art in its picturesque scenery and rich vast natural surroundings. He eventually settled on Vancouver Island permanently 20 years ago and then on Salt Spring Island.

John mainly paints with oil, primarily on board, but is diverse in the use of other mediums such as acrylic, pencil, watercolour and charcoal. John shares his interpretation of nature's design through a mixture of realism and abstract.

He works mainly with Canadian birds, wildlife, and landscapes paying close attention to structure, form, light and .patterns found within the chosen subject matter.

John has been inspired by the Group of Seven, the Italian Renaissance and 18th-century French Impressionism. He has an extensive collection of art books that motivate his work.

A majority of his paintings have been sold privately and he has shown his work in a variety of venues over the past 20 years.

John took a few years off to build on his skill set while creating a collection of his most recent work.
